The only place I've seen it used as a name is in a John le Carré novel where it's the ironical name of a security guard whose main job is to beat people up!
In real life, it's the kind of sweet, cute word that makes people think of pretty young animals with huge pleading eyes, and would therefore be used for a girl if at all. I have met a woman, in her 60s I would guess, whose given name is Bambi, no doubt for the same reasons though in the Disney movie Bambi was a male.
Oh, and I once knew a dog named Tawny (because of the colour of his fur) who sired a litter of pups on the pooch next door, and the puppy they kept was named Fawny in his honour. I never knew the gender of the puppy.
My words would be sentimental, non-human and unsuitable!

Hmmm it doesn't appeal to me because it is also an English word. It means baby deer. I love baby deer :P If it were just its meaning it would be fine, but it is an actual word. So it always makes me think of something small that needs to be protected and I would feel a bit hmmm weird if I had the name as an adult, especially as a self confident 25, 30 or 50 year old.

These are my impressions of it. The sound isn't horrible but it just doesn't work for me. I also dislike Fern. The only one that I like that sounds a bit similar is Fay.
I don't think it was ever popular. It entered the top 1000 a few times but never so high up that anyone could say it was popular.

I actually like Fawn in a GP way. I think it's cute but I don't see it working in real life. My three words are cutesy, infantile, and natural. I don't think it was ever popular but it did chart here and there throughout the '60's and '70's. If I were to use it, it would be a middle name.
