IanIan seems to have so much more potential to be interesting and individual. James seems too carefully aimed at normativity. Even John is more interesting than James.

IanMore personality. Now I do love Jamie and suppose it should be short for James, but just James itself I am no longer into. There was a day I would've considered using it IRL though. Both Ian and James have been on our boy lists before.

Here I will say that the name Ian has a special meaning to me. My heart thrills and my knees go a little weak whenever I see it and whenever I hear it.James did that once, too....but that died fairly quickly.As a name, I've never liked Ian. I think it whiney and somehow insubstantial. I've always liked James, it's strong, handsome, and classic.You know what? I started out intending to choose James, but James in the end was a dick and Ian will always make my heart thrill.It's legitimate to associate a name with a person and like it or dislike it due to the association, no?So Ian it is!

Definitely JamesA lot more timeless, clean, and you could use several methods of changing the impression with nicknames like Jim to sound casual, or Jimmy to sound happier and brighter. Or just keep it at James. Ian has fewer possibilities and a weird diphthong.

JamesFor some reason I love a lot of -ian names (Caspian, Dorian, Fabian etc.), but Ian itself is a bit dull. James I can deal with a bit better (I don't mind Jamie or Jay).
