[Opinions] Declan
I'm currently expecting and my husband really loves Declan and I really don't like it. To be it just sounds very Irish and I can't connect to it. What does everyone think of the name here?

Strangely I don't think "Irish" when I see it, I think of the comedy pair "Ant and Dec" here in the UKI like the name but not sure if it sounds right on a child...

I don't like it either, and I couldn't really say why. I think I must have met a very unattractive Declan at some point, because I get an impression of spots and jug-ears from it. :/

It has always been among my top names and then it was used for my 1 year old nephew. I adore it. I was kind of sad that it became unusable for me when he was born but I can't imagine him with any other name.I think it's handsome, strong, unusual enough, still pronounceable. It ages well too. I also don't see it as overly Irish, myself.

I don't like Declan at all.

I like Irish names but like you, I don't like it. To me it just sounds clunky and doesn't flow too well

I really love the name Declan and I have for some time. I like the feel of it and I like that I could call him Dex if I wanted.

I don't mind it. I know someone who has three boys Aidan, Liam, and Declan.

Still not sure eh? I grew up near a big family with an eldest son Declan, and never noticed that it was Irish. But in retrospect they had an Irish surname, and the sibs included Colleen and Kathleen. So.What I don't like about it is that Americans say it as if it ended in lyn. So you get creative things like Decklynn on girls. Too tryndee. Otherwise, I would think it was pretty nice. NMS though; the cl in the middle doesn't work for me.

Just going to link to an older post I made about this name (you can see other replies about Declan in this thread too):http://www.behindthename.com/bb/baby/4687688

I really like that response and how I feel.

I used to love it, and we considered it when we were expecting our first (we are NOT Irish at all).
I have met a few and it doesn't scream Irish, but it does have a solid and handsome feel. I also have not met many. If you are not into it though, I would keep looking until you find something you both like. There are tons of names with similar feels to Declan, it just depends on what your husband likes about the name. If you give us some parameters we would have a hayday throwing out suggestions.

Good idea. Does husband like Irish names? Or maybe names starting with D?
Or perhaps he just likes it but can't really say why. We are here to help! :-)

I know that it doesn't matter whether we're Irish or not but that name gives me an image of a stereotypical Irish person and Ireland. I will soon ask him what he likes about it and post asking for suggestions. I also know he likes popular names giving the reason that they are names that people like, I completely disagree with that.

Eh. Not very interesting. It's got a bit of a trendy vibe to it.Compromise. Neither DH nor I got to use our favorite names. But we did find names we both liked.

Oh I love it. Partly because I always think of Declan Donnelly who is such a lovely, adorable man.
