I think I prefer May but I'm not a huge fan of the name anyway.
A friend just named one of her twins Mai which is the French spelling of the name (although I believe there are other meanings to it as well). I don't know why they chose it. I've seen Mai used a few times in hyphenated names along with May and Mae e.g. Ellie-Mae, Lily-Mai etc.
