In Germany (and yes, I am living there), the endings -i and -y for short forms and nicknames are used quite interchangeably; the -y spelling is not convincing argument for a different derivation.

Not also that a Greek name cannot end in -y (There is a very restricted set of possible endings for Classical Greek words).
