Eleri is an old Welsh name of which the original meaning is unknown. It is not related to Mary, but one of its possible meanings is "bitter", which is also a possible meaning for the name Mary, although this is just a coincidence. Perhaps that's how the confusion arose?
Anyhow, they are both beautiful names!
