Tarben was very close to Neila when he first arrived since they could both speak Danish, and with her help he quickly learned enough basic English to start 3rd grade in the fall. At first, Atlas didn't like that his new brother was taking all of his parents' attention. Alwin decided to sign them both up for the local rec hockey team, and told Tarben that since he was the resident "hockey expert", he should teach Tarben all about "his" game. Atlas was proud to instruct someone else on the finer points of the sport, and Tarben was glad to learn. Soon, the two had a close friendship.
"Night fell, lots of large stars came out, and the Hemulen loved his park all the better. It was wide and mysterious; one could lose one's way in it and still be at home."
