I don't like it, as it has a very redneck or southern hick vibe to me. Its in there with Jolene. Its unfortunate because a beloved grandmother had the middle name Darlene so I feel I should like it, I just can't. I don't really like its nicknames, either (Dar, Dara, Darla, etc).

I always think of Princess Eloise from Abbott & Costello's 'Jack and the Beanstalk', since Darlene is the alias she uses when she's pretending not to be a princess. Probably a pretty obscure reference, but I must have watched that movie at least a dozen times when I was a kid.

But aside from that, the name just feels a bit too sweet to me.
