Is it usable? my husband liked it when I suggested it, but then said it sounded like an old man name

All old men started out as new babies. Solomon would be delightful on a small child, I think, but think carefully about nns before you decide. Sol or Solly are not to everyone's taste.

I love Solomon. I think it's definitely still usable. It's true that it sounds a bit old fashioned, but there's nothing wrong with that. I think it'd be refreshing on a little boy, not old fashioned at all.

I think Solomon is a great name and definitely usable imo. I would love to meet a little Solomon. Come to think of it, I would just love to meet a male of any age named Solomon!

I don't see why it wouldn't be usable; it's in the top 500 and rising (I'd actually be more concerned with potential popularity). I've personally always loved Solomon, and I think it strikes a perfect balance of youthfulness and maturity. I love Solly for a little fellow, and just Sol for when he gets older.

Its one of those dusty clunky names that I adore. It's incredibly bold and definitely mature. However, I find those names refreshing right now...Plus, it's a strong traditional name as well. I mean, people are using Noah and Isaac still... why not Solomon?Of course it's popularity is akin to using Walter, Simon or Roger today... but that doesn't make it any less of a statement name... and an awesome one at that.

Solomon is a good strong name although a little daring. It is old fashioned, but older names like Daniel and Ezra are making a come back. It is definitely usable.

It is, but I hate it. It reminds me of salmon fish.

Yes it is usable. Yes it sounds like an old man name. Yes it could take on a freshness. Yes you would be looked at funny. My friend's nephew is Solomon and when he was born I thought it was bizarre and just kinda bad. But I don't even know the kid, and the name has grown on me. It's heavy, yes, but also gutsy and lively. I'd nickname a Solomon 'Solo' (like saul-o). I think the fact that the Solomon I know of is Solomon Gerhard doesn't help the heavy and old-man feel. I'd liven Solomon up with something much younger.
