[Opinions] Boston
A friend of mine has decided on Boston for her (3rd) child. Boy or girl.
Boston Charlotte or Boston Oscar.
Wdyt?
BQ1 - Any place names that you love, GP or no?
BQ2 - What do you think of using place names in general?
For me, I am not a huge fan, but I do like Belraine, and secretly think Germany might be cool on a girl. Strictly GP though.

Why not Boston Terrier? more
It's good for a boy or a girl.

Boston is so horrible as a name, though I do love the city.
On the other hand, I love Dallas as a male name but hate the city, lol. For that reason, Dallas is definitely a GP for me.
I like some place names and not others, so it's not a like/dislike thing. I love India for a girl.

Boston...I don't really like it, but I could maybe almost see it working on a tough-guy type, or a shy, skinny boy with huge glasses (two different pictures, I know). On a girl though...eugh. I just cannot see it. And something about those combos, Boston Charlotte and Boston Oscar, just really turn me off. It may be because they're all disyllabic and I feel that Boston could only benefit from a longer middle name, or a short, concrete middle name.
I'm not big on place names, but I do like Cairo on a boy. Definitely GP, but I think it's quite nice. I'm slowly warming to Berlin as well. For what gender, I don't know. I do love Israel, but that was a person's name before it was a place, so I'm not sure it counts.
I'm not totally against place names, some sound okay. Something about them bug me a bit, though; they almost seem a bit pretentious, I guess, and too "big" for a real person to bear, if that makes any sense at all.

Boston for a boy is not that bad, though is not something I would consider. It's not a bad middle name
Some place names that aren't too bad
Adelaide is a favourite but it is named after a person which makes it a little easier.
Vienna is a name I would never use but I rather like it.
Roma or Romana is a nice name I think.
I think place names can be all right if there is a connection or a lot of place names are named after a person so that is ok.

I kind of like Boston for a boy. It's awful for a girl.
I adore Sedona. I'd use it no hesitation.
I think place names are okay sometimes. It depends on how namey they are. Like around where I grew up there was a Jessamine and Fayette county and a little town called Ravenna those are namey enough to use. If it were something like Texas (my great great aunt's name) or Albuquerque or something like that it's different.

Aww, the idea of an old lady called Texas is pretty amazing.
It is pretty fun. She went by Texie most of the time.
Oh my! Albuquerque is fantastic in a 'oh no way' way. I would simply flip to see it on a kid... but I think its got so much quirk it at least deserves pet name consideration.
To be clear, I do not think it is an appropriate name for a human... but it would totally make my day to meet a person whose parents did not know that. ;)

I 100% agree. Albuquerque "Albie" would make an awesome pet name.
I hope she has a boy.
Boston is on my short list. Boston the place is special to me and I find the sound attractive (fits in with my other favourites Griffin, Deacon & Hudson).
I personally would only use a place name if the place itself meant something to me. I like India, but I've never been to India and have no attachment to the place so would never use it. London on the other hand, I do and would.
This does not apply to place names that are also people names or that were people names first. Eg would use Adelaide even though the city means nothing to me and I've never been.
Just a personal preference :)

The chances of Boss or Bossy happening as nns seems fairly high, which to my mind would not be good. Is she actually from Boston, or is it a family surname?
I like quite a few place-names, but they're all Welsh and local and meaningful, or are also generally-used people-names. I don't much like the idea of naming a child after a place you've no connection with, but I suppose it depends on how much you like the name.

Actually, she likes Bos ... as it will be his (if boy) initials too. Not sure about a girl.
She is not from Boston, but she loves it there, went to school there, the father is from there, etc...
I agree that there should be a connection to a place-name if you use it. I know a Baker who was named such because both his parents happened to grow up on a Baker Street and Baker Road in two different towns... then they bought a house on Baker Ave in my town. So... they named their son Baker.
I only really like names that just happen to be places as well (Elmira, Randolph, Sherman, Cicily, etc...).
