Not one Tarka William, but two! Remarkable indeed. Is there a reason for it - sudden outbreak of fondness for otters, maybe? Or just the kind of thing that a random universe might be expected to confuse us with now and then?

Random universe combined with the fact that Tarka is my number 1 guilty pleasure, so I probably put it into the search engine when going through the birth announcements last year. If I lived in the UK I’d definitely use it, Sebastian Tarka and Gabriel Tarka both sound good to me.
I just checked and there were 3 Trakas born in England and Wales in 2010. I wonder how it will fare in 2014 lists. I’ve also seen it as a nickname for Tarquin.

I also am glad to see Tamsin. I just really like that name. Hope is a bit passe to me for the middle, but it conveys a lot of meaning, so I cannot dislike it that much. Still, Tamsin could have used a spunkier pairing.
Fear of Tammy is the only thing that keeps me from putting Tamsin on my own list.
Also - Trixie! perfect sib to a Betsy... and even Mama Polly matches. Violet is a great middle name for this. Very grounding, yet light and airy.

It must be in use elsewhere too.. I remember reading the Chronicles of Narnia as a kid and the royalty in the city of Calorman were called Tarkeena and Tarkaans.
Plus, Tarka is the name of a town in Bangladesh and also a word to describe Indian seasoning (though, I admit that last tidbit has a Wikipedia reference.

The book would be my first thought - it's still in print & the old film makes it onto family 'best of' lists. Wikipedia says Williamson invented the name: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarka_the_Otter
Unless these people are actually related to him, I doubt Tarka Cordell had any influence. I'd never heard of him & it looks like he was an old school pal of some famous peeps, not a celebrity himself.

Agree with this. I've seen Tarka a few times in Times and Telegraph BAs, I think Tarka the Otter is the inspiration!
