[Opinions] Opinions on less-known Japanese names
I've used 5go.biz/sei/cgi/ninki1.htm and 5go.biz/sei/cgi/ninki2.htm (in Japanese) to search for less-known Japanese names that are in the top 1000 list in 2014, starting from 1000 and going up 5 places to 950.

BOYS:
Ryōta (陵太) - really like the sound and look of this one, but the meaning is a bit grim, althogh it's perhaps meant to be an "important" or grand name
Kippei (桔平) - don't like the look/sound, but do like the meaning
Miyabi (雅) - nice meaning, but reminds me too much of Mr. Miyagi
Shuntarō (駿太郎)-nice sound/loook, pretty neat meaning
Tetsuya (徹也) - okay, but reminds me too much of Tetsuyo in the manga Akira for my comfort
Fumiya (文哉) - like the meaning, but it sounds a bit feminine to me
Kōsuke (康祐) - love this one, sound look and meaning
Yūya (佑弥) - nice meaning, but again seems more feminine
Naotarō (直太郎) - nice
Sōtarō (颯太郎) - nice, like the meaning a lot
Eiji (瑛士) - coolGIRLS:
Niko (にこ) - I associate this most with the boy's nickname, but it makes a lovely Japanese girls' name for sure
Yūka (結花)- this one's okay, nice meaning
Nana (七菜) - not my favorite
Airi (あいり)- the meaning wouldn't show up on the website, but i like the sound/look
Kureha (紅葉) - like everything, but does remind me of a boys' name a little
Shion (紫音) - like the meaning, but not as much a fan of the sound
Reika (麗華) - beautiful meaning and really like it
Ai (亜依) - not as much my favorite, like is more as a nickname for other names like Aiko, etc.
Saki (沙季)- nice meaning, but not my favorite
Mizuki (瑞稀)
Mika (実花)

The reason the characters for Airi doesn't show up in the kanji section is the fact that they are hiragana characters (in other words, they're phonetic characters).

BOYS:
Ryōta (陵太)- handsome sounding
Kippei (桔平)- dislike
Miyabi (雅)- "elegance," "refinement," or "courtliness" are nice meanings
Shuntarō (駿太郎)- Excellent
Tetsuya (徹也)- nice
Fumiya (文哉)- sounds very familiar
Kōsuke (康祐)- Strongly like this
Yūya (佑弥)- I'm not fond of the repeating 'y' consonant.
Naotarō (直太郎)- okay
Sōtarō (颯太郎)- nice
Eiji (瑛士)- tolerableGIRLS:
Niko (にこ)- cute but a tad masculine at the same time.
Yūka (結花)- Nice but I prefer Yuki
Nana (七菜)- alright
Airi (あいり)- Lovely
Kureha (紅葉)- not crzay about it
Shion (紫音)- Great! It may also be usable as a boys name. In the Mangas "No.6" and "Darker than Black" and in the video game "The King of Fighters XI," it is used for male characters.
Reika (麗華)- Lovely
Ai (亜依)- cute
Saki (沙季)- okay
Mizuki (瑞稀)- Pretty
Mika (実花)- Nice, but in the west, it might be confused with the male name Micah. Shuntarō and Kōsuke are my favorites amongst the boys. Of the girls, I am torn between Airi, Reika and Mizuki. I would call the hypothetical children Kōsuke Shuntarō and Mizuki Alice.

Well, my only way to estimate how well I like the names is by whether the sounds appeal to me, and I suppose that what appeals to me depends somewhat on my being only able to speak English. And I guess the meanings have some role, but I'm not sure I understand those the same way a Japanese person would. What is a purple sound? But anyway. These sound appealing to me:
Kosuke
Naotaro
Airi
ReikaNames I like that could possibly work as middle names for a Japanese-American child (I'm mostly looking for names on my list that don't have consonant blends or letter L because otherwise I don't really know what criteria to use!):
Karissa
Kristina
Sierra
Eden
Merrick
Dominic
DamonSo let's say these are my combos:
Kosuke Merrick
Reika Sierra

I like Yūya and Yūka best. I actually know a three year old girl named Yuka; she's full Japanese and her mom works with me. She's adorable. I have no idea what the middles would be. Maybe:Yūya Alan
Yūya Timothy
Yūya EricYūka Pauline
Yūka Marianne
Yūka Winnifred
