Mleko is slovenian word for milk. Therefore Mlekuz (or Mlekuž, as it is originally written) denotes person who is connected with milk, dairying etc. Surname originates from north-west Slovenia, upper Soca valley (more precisely from Bavsica valley - a very small and isolated valley in Julian Alps). It is one of the most common surnames in the region, particularly in the Bovec municipality. It reflects the traditional economy of the region, which was based on the seasonal movement of flock (particularly sheep and goats) from lowland villages to mountain pastures. It is not surprising that another common surname from the region is Kravanja (Krava is cow in Slovenian).
