If you tried that with any name at all, it'd look weird. Proves nothing.
Glen is fine, if dated. I hear 1930s-1940s jazz in the background. And it's no worse than any other geographical/topographical name and better than many. I prefer it as a stand-alone male name, rather than a shortened form of Glenda or, believe it or not, Glennifer.
