[Facts] Book about Georgian given names and surnames available in PDF.
Hello everyone,
I recently discovered that the exhaustive Georgian book "Personal and Family Names in Georgia" ("გვარ-სახელები საქართველოში") written by Avtandil Silagadze (ავთანდილ სილაგაძე) and Anzor Totadze (ანზორ თოთაძე) is legally available for free on the Internet as a PDF-document. The document was originally published on-line by the Digital Repository of the National Parliamentary Library of Georgia.
The book itself was published in Tbilisi in 1996 (some sources erroneously say 1997). It is written entirely in Georgian, except for a few pages (which are in English). In the PDF-document, the English pages can be found on:
- page 1: Introduction (or brief summary)
- page 364: Table of contents
- page 366: Title page
Among others, the book contains information about how Georgian surnames are spread among the regions in the country, as well as an appendix with the 300 most common given names in Georgia.
The book can be downloaded on the following website: http://core.kmi.open.ac.uk/display/15534618
On that website, they also provide the link of where the book was originally made available. In case the above link ever becomes broken, I will mention the original link as well:
http://dspace.nplg.gov.ge//handle/1234/7091
That is all that I wanted to say. :) I hope that this will be of significant help to everyone who is interested in Georgian given names as well as Georgian surnames.
Sincerely,
Lucille
