What doesn't help it for me is that it was a tradition in my mother's family to call the grandfathers Pop or Poppy. My grandfather was called Pop by his grandchildren, and his father was called Poppy Moore (his last name) by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, sometimes shortened to just Poppy. Poppy Moore died when I was four, and I have only one memory of him, but I still heard him referred to enough that I associate Poppy with a very elderly great-grandfather.

I really don't think I'd like Poppy anyway, it's just not an attractive sound at all. I'm really astonished that it's popular in England.
