Help[Opinions] Axl/Axle/Axel
So I was telling my boyfriend, who is a 80's era Guns'N'Roses fan, that one of my coworkers has a toddler named Axl. He then told me that he liked the name and has considered using it on a son. I was a bit iffy about it, but then we both agreed that we preferred the spelling Axel. I've looked it up and learning that it is a legitimate name (and German, mind you, which both of us have German backgrounds), I'm actually finding the name growing on me.
What are your thoughts on the name? What would you put it in a combo with, and what do you imagine Axel's siblings would be? :)

Well, I think Axl is silly and a direct reference to Axl Rose.
Axle just reminds me of wheels.
Axel would be the best spelling, but since I'm a figure skater it just reminds me of axel jumps! So I can't win with this name.
Axel's siblings would have similar "I'm cool" names. I mean the type of names that are trying too hard to be cool.

I'm not sure what I think of it anymore. I first heard it when I was in high school and a coworker had a son named Axel (not sure how she spelled it). At that point I thought it was just the English word, like the car part, and so it seemed tacky to me. I couldn't shake off the English word even after learning it's a legit Scandanavian name.
But I think the character from The Middle has made it seem more usable to me. It feels almost hipster-y. Pretty sure they spell it Axl in that tv show, which is my favorite spelling (since it's not the same as the car part!).
I'm actually surprised no one has mentioned the association with that show yet! Does nobody watch it?! It's hilarious! But anyway. :)

I really like it. I am a bit Guns n Roses fan too, though I don't think the Axl Rose association is great because he's a bit of an A hole but the association with the band as a whole is nice (I also like Saul which is Slash's real name). I actually knew an Axl Rose at school. The full name. Poor kid. I think as long as your last name isn't Rose, its fine
I think it's cool. That's probably the only word that can be used to describe it. I know from asking on this board about it in the past that it may receive some negative views, (I haven't read the other responses yet) though I can't remember why aside from the car axel assiciation.

I don't mind the name and agree that Axel is definitely the best version. I think Axel would need an equally strong mn, something more traditional maybe. As far as sibling names go, well I think older, possibly more unusual names would work well. I'm thinking August, Rex, Rufus, Edmund, Edgar, Hugo, Frederick, Emmett, Wesley, Leopold, Judah, Gideon, Darcy, Darby, Dexter, Sebastian, Zane, Xavier, Chester, Chandler, Barnaby, Miles, Milo, Maximilian, Maxim and Maxwell would all work for boys. I never liked the name. It seems so rough to me, and not in a good way. It's hard for me to describe it. :P

He doesnt need a nn but you cant control what other people call him. I would think it would be a given that eventually someone at school, work, teammates, friends, even some family members would say "hey Ax pass the ketchup" or "whats up Ax?" It just kind of happens occasionally.
My nephew Ryan we say, Hey Ry sometimes. Kevin is Kev at times. And occasionally Derrek is Der. I find that everyone in my family with a two syllable name we shorten it sometimes. Kelly is Kel in a hurry, Coleen is Col. I just think it would be inevitable that people would call him Ax at some point.

I love Guns 'N' Roses and even if Axl Rose was uber cool back in the 80's, he was also a jerk (still is, I guess). What I'm trying to say is that I'm not sure Axl Rose is a good association. On the other hand, if I met a little boy named Axl/Axel (agree Axel is the better spelling) and found out he was named after Axl Rose I would pretty much think his parents were awesome.
I think Axel/Axl is kind of like Hendrix and Lennon, definitely associated with musicians.
I also consider the name Axel to be a classic Scandinavian name. It's kind of upper class, actually.

My husband LOVES the name Axel and Ace. His last name is Ringland and I cannot stand Ace Ringland! However, we have both fell in love with the name Easton Sawyer for a boy and Preston Leigh (nickname Presley) for a girl and the responses for it have been almost all negative!! SO do what you and your husband want, it's your baby! I do like the name Axel, or even a middle name. Axel Gabriel, Gabriel Axel, Axel Warren, there are lots of options for middle names! Goodluck!

I see Axel as a normal legit name (I'm Dutch) and I prefer Axel over any other spelling. Axle looks 'made up' to me. Axl looks a little weird as well.
Axel is a nice name I think and deserves a bit more attention than it's getting.

I woud say that Axel is more Scandinavian than German, but that's just my opinion and feelings about the name.
Axel is a common name in Sweden where I live, it's a very old Swedish name and pretty much considered as a classic. I like Axel. The only thing that puts me off is that axel also is the Swedish word for shoulders. Still a good name, though. :)

I dislike it. It's too associated with Axl Rose (who chose that name for its anagram of oral sex) and the axle of a car.
That said, I have met/heard of four babies with the name Axl/Axel. And I don't know too many babies.
