As a male name, its okay. As a female name, I don't like it.

I actually knew a guy named Murphy years ago. He was cute and cool so I really liked it. There was also a great movie, "Murphy's Romance" with James Garner as the title character.

I wouldn't hesitate a second to use Murphy on a boy. I don't mind it on a girl, either. So cute.
I also think it would be a splendidly clever nickname for a combo like
MURdoch FInlay or
MURiel FIonaJust sayin.

I know as a female I would not like to be named Murphy at all. I wouldn't like to be called that as a boy either. Heck, I wouldn't even like it for my last name. It just sounds awful.
I think it would make a decent name for a big, gallopity, shaggy dog.

Never heard of Murphy Brown, but all the Murphys I've ever known have been good old-fashioned lns. Doreen Murphy, yes! Murphy Doreen Jenkins, no!In fact, on thinking about Murphy, it doesn't sound that attractive. "It's Murphy in here." "Yes, and it's Murphy outside as well. Just a Murph kind of day." Stuffy and sultry and overcast and airlessly hot.

Can I make "Just a Murph kind of day" my new signature? I think it's time to retire Viv Vance.

Help yourself! Though I do sympathise with VV's punctuation issues ...

Aw, I loved that show. I was never fond of the MC's name, though. It doesn't feel particularly masculine or feminine to me. I like a lot of surname-names, but Murphy feels like it's just last name material. Plus, "Murphy's Law" makes it a downer.

Not a fan. I met a cat called Murphy and it was great on him. Great pet name, not great human name. That said, I think it's kinda cool if its your last name and people call you by it, but not as a stand alone fn

Haha, Murphy Brown! Haven't thought about that show in ages. Even so I have a really hard time picturing it on a girl... it's just sooo boyish to me. It makes me think of the brother from Boondock Saints that was named Murphy. I have a stupid love for surnames on boys so I think it's pretty cool. Myy hometown's NN is "Murphy" so I've given it some thought before but while part of me likes the sentiment of it, I'm not sure I'd actually want to honor that place.

Man, I used to watch "Murphy Brown" all the time but no one seems to remember it. I instantly thought of it when I read the subject line so I was surprised to see you mentioned it! Because of that show if I met a girl named Murphy I'd probably be able to hold back my frown 82.4% better than if I weren't acquainted with it. It's a surname to me now and it seems kind of dorky for a first name. Murphy. Rhymes with smurfy. Heh, I don't know. I just feel like someone with a forever-congested voice would be named Murphy.
