UN: Arcadia
P1: Frances Margaret Price, "Franny" (24)
P2: Damon Harold Horsfell (24)
DD: Hazel Gillian Horsfall (nb)
It takes a little while for Franny to accept that she's having a baby. She knows the instant she sees two lines on her pregnancy test that she's keeping it, but she can't get excited, either. She'd been trying to prevent pregnancy, at least until their student loans were payed off... but in the back of her mind there's the idea of a child, someone as quirky as Franny and as smiley as Damon. When she feels the first kicks, she starts to become content.
Damon, on the other hand, is thrilled from the start. A baby! He has never quite let himself imagine having a family. In the back of his mind, he was afraid he'd never find anyone who wanted him. Even after he started dating and things went okay, he was afraid he'd end up alone. Knowing that Franny is going to have his child makes him feel a strange sense of stability and certainty. On his good days, anyway. When he's in one of his mood, he's scared of all the things he can't do for his child, convinced their kid will hate having a father in a chair.
Four weeks before her due date, Franny travels downstate to attend a baby shower in her home town. The shower is wonderful. She loves her city friends and Damon's family, but it's incredibly comforting to see all the people who saw her grow up and those who grew up with her. When she goes to bed that night experiencing cramps, Franny figures it's because she had too much cake. At midnight she wakes up confused, wondering if she wet the bed. Her water's broken, and her contractions are coming quick. Franny's family rushes her to the hospital. They try to call Damon, but he's a heavy sleeper and doesn't answer until two hours after they've been admitted. He begs Franny to cross her legs and starts the four hour drive down state. But the labor's fast - a brisk five hours after she woke up, Franny gives birth to a girl, Hazel Gillian Horsfall.
Damon cries at the sight of his daughter, three hours old. Franny refuses to let her mom and sisters hold her so, doctor's aside, Damon can be the second person to touch her. He's there for her first feeding, her first poop. There are so many firsts ahead. Three days later, they pack everything into the car and get ready to go back home, this time with an extra passenger. No, not the baby. Franny's little sister Selma is coming with them. She's about the start school in the city and she plans to spend the first year with Damon and Franny and find roommates sophomore year. It will be an adjustment, but Franny and Damon know they can use the help. Selma's arranged her schedule so she'll be free in the afternoon. It's going to save them a ton on daycare.
