[Surname] Cantu origins in Mexico
There were actually three brothers born in Minas de Ramos, Geronimo, Lorenzo and Joseph. (now in the Mexican state of San Luis Potosi).Thier father was Jusepe Cantu born 1572 and mother Maria del Rio y de la Cerda born in 1580. Their surnames were Cantu del Rio y de la Cerda. Lorenzo was first born about 1598. Geronimo was born 1600 and Joseph was born in 1602. Lorenzo had no family known of since he became a priest. Geronimo and his line went on to establish a few towns, now cities, north of the Nuevo Leon's capital city of Monterrey. Joseph line did the same but their settlements were to the east and southeast of Monterrey. Some of these cities are Cienega de Flores, China, General Bravo, Cadereyta, Montemorelos and General Teran. Lorenzo was founder of two cities in the far south of Nuevo Leon, Arramberi and Zaragoza. All of the Cantus that are in northern Mexico and Texas come from this line.

My great grandfather was Santiago Cantu, from Nuevo Leon. He married Santos Pena. I do not have more information from the Cantu side.

This request is interesting because in Europe we hano no precise idea about the origin othe the mexican Cantu. I am Italian, in Lombardy we consider Cantu a possible variant of Cantù, which is a Lombard surname coming form the town of Cantù, near COMO the city that gives the name to lake Como. This is what says a mexican author. But in fact it is not so sure
Other authors say that Cantu comes from a basque surname. In Lombardy Cantù is a very local surname, Instead Cantu are a large number of people i Mexico or Usa.The spelling of Joseph... Juseppe makes me suspicious: It could be a wrong spelling o Giuseppe.Bye for now Giacomo Ganza living at Sondrio By Milano
