Liora is back on the table. Which do you prefer and why?

Liora seems pointedly Hebrew to me, which isn't a bad thing of course but I happen to know you're not Jewish, and Hebrew names seem weirdly trendy among non-Jews, which doesn't really happen with any other ethnic/foreign names, and it is kinda weird to me, I would not use a Hebrew name that had no mainstream/traditional English-speaking-Christian cultural heritage, it'd be like using Aditi or Xue or Asra ... except not, because it'd be sort of also like using Suri or Apple or Cruz.
MARY. Use Mary!
Languages aside and thinking only of superficial appeal, Liora is prettier than Miriam and I'd rather be Liora.
But I still like Miriam okay.

On Mary...
My mom has started referring to the baby as Mary, for reasons I cannot understand. I've had to correct her several times.
I think we're going to continue to go with Miriam. It's a kinda of a family thing - it's Christian, and Catholic, and old testament - so it fits into the extended family well. I had no idea that naming a child - and understanding that both my daughter and myself will be judged on her name - would be so hard. :-/ My husband doesn't get this - he would be fine naming our daughter Anastasia and insisting on the pronunciation of ana--stas-ee-a

(It is on our list too).
It is less common, prettie in my opinion and the meaning of "my light" seems more significant than just being a form of Mary. Plus, it is one of those great names that rarely gets shortened (like Heidi) and you won't have to worry about people choosing a nickname you hate.
That said, Miriam is a fantastic name and I adore the nickname Mim. I think it would make a great sibset, but I would start with Liora. (Mim seems like "younger sister" material anyway).

For me personally I prefer Liora. I love the look of it, it's more unusual and I like the meaning.
I don't dislike the name Miriam, I just struggle to imagine it on anyone under the age of 50. However, I can see it's more straightforward than Liora which could get confused with Laura.

I like both, but I prefer Liora. It sounds more lively. I can imagine Liora being confused with Laura or perhaps Leah, but it's a gorgeous name. I'd still use it.

Miriam, because I prefer the sound and I like Miri as a nickname. Also, I have been drawn to M names lately.

Liora! Miriam is too old lady and prim and proper sounding. I like that Liora basically means "my light." And Liora still has the religious connection but without being too obvious about it.

First, let me say that I like both. Miriam is warm and friendly and Liora is exotic and mysterious. Just based on sound, I prefer Miriam and I think the potential nn Mim is really kickass. Liora doesn't roll off my tongue as smoothly yet has really great nn potential: Lee, Lia, Ora, etc.
If I had to choose one, I'd go with Miriam.

Miriam. Miriam is much nicer, in my opinion. Liora only seems a little more interesting to me because I've never seen it before, but that doesn't make it a better name. It sounds very similar to Laura, which is obviously a common name. I think Liora is more visually appealing than anything...the sound is nothing to get excited about.

Miriam= can be good, has a cute side, but can also be a bit frumpy. It's a bit too warm-sounding.
Liora= very smooth and cool, sounds pretty and is enjoyable to say, good for anyone of any age, has a mystical vibe to it without being at all 'out there', and is just generally prettier.

Miriam is one of my favourite names. I probably don't like Liora because the sound is close to Laura which I have never liked.

Liora. Miriam is nice, but Liora is prettier. It's less old lady, and more sophisticated/sexy/mysterious. I like the edge it has.

I think Liora is more interesting. I've met three Miriams my age and no Lioras. I also just like the sound of Liora better.

Liora is a little more fun and to me it's also a more 'easy going' kind of name. Miriam is alright, and more classic. Will probably age better.
If it were up to me, I would probably go with Liora. But I think Miriam is great for you guys. It has a lot of history, is a somewhat classic name, plus it's a name you've liked for ages :)
