[Opinions] Virginia
My daughter, who is pregnant, is considering Virginia if it's a girl. Opinions on Virginia?

I like Virginia, it sounds smart, strong, and noble. It has some beauty, it definitely isn't ugly but at the same time it isn't the most beautiful name either. I much prefer the nn Ginny to Virgie. Ginny is cute and spunky, but Virgie sounds like an old lady nn to me.

I approve! I love Virginia, it was our lead back-up name if Margaret had turned out not to fit our daughter.
They all go by Ginny in the end, don't they? So it's really a matter of her opinion of Ginny. Virginity didn't actually go out with Queen Elizabeth I, but it certainly lacks the moral authority and fragile beauty previously associated with it. And Virginia's a place name too, which doesn't help.
Perhaps she might be willing to use Virginia as a mn if she really likes it?
Oh dear, now I've got that annoying "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus" schmaltz stuck in my mind too! Not good.

I've never liked Virginia...it is actually one of the few V- girls names that I don't like. It sounds so stuffy to me and 'virgin' really does stick out when I read it on paper. I also don't like the 'irg' sound in it.
Ginny is a cute nickname though.

Virginia's a good name! She should totally go with it. :)
It's a lot better than Georgia, but not near as pretty as Carolina.
A beautiful name.
I've only known one Virginia, sometimes called her full name, sometimes, Ginger.
I would call a daughter Virginia, or be happy to be one, myself.
As to its being the name of a state, doesn't impinge on me, as I'm not in the U.S.

I think it's adorable! And I love the nickname Ginny.
I like it a lot, but I could never use it. The 'virgin' part is just too much. I'd love to see it on someone elses child. Another reason is that I dislike the nicknames for it. Ginny is okay but I really dislike Gin, Virgie, Ginna, Ginia or anything else you could come up with.
It used to even be my favorite name for a while when I was 17 or so. It gives me a nice image and has a lovely white color. But the 'virgin' together with the 'gin' now really bothers me. I don't know what happened.
But I'd be excited to meet a baby Virginia especially if she went by her full name. The youngest I know will be 28 this year.

It's okay. So-so. Not offensive or stupid, not particularly beautiful or noticeable. Ginny would be a great NN.
I love it. The "virgin" part really doesn't jump out at me. I just think of the state (which is a good association for me). I've known a lot of girls named Virginia through the years.
I think it's beautiful. I don't really like the nn Ginny though. Would she use a nickname?
I lived in the beautiful state of Virginia for many years so I should like it as a first name but to me it is too "state name". Also, it sounds too stuffy to me honestly. That said, I had a doctor in Virginia who named her baby daughter Virginia in 2011. I was surprised by the choice! She calls the little girl "Ginny" which is sweet.
I'm sort of in love with that name and I'd be overjoyed if she used it.
I might use it myself if I had another daughter (I'd call her Ginny). But probably, I wouldn't. It's like Sierra only in the other direction - doesn't quite hit my "class" sweet spot. A teensy shade too classy for me. I'd end up making it a middle name. Today my favorite combo is Edith Virginia.
I've never met a Virginia who didn't go by Ginny or Gini. Gosh, it's such a nice name. It seems classical but not too classicky. It also smacks of old-American-Christianness because of the "virgin" in it, and because of the state name. But it's not too Southern-stuffy, and I don't perceive it as being too white either.
I'm not sure how I'd feel about it if I lived on the East Coast. The state name might be too much?

I am from the East Coast and I have known several Virginias. It didn't really seem too place name-y to me, even when I lived in Virginia. I think it makes a fine name (maybe the fact that I went to college in Virginia and love it like crazy even contributes to why I like it).
Virgin and vagina spring to mind immediately.
