[Opinions] Mindy
WDYT? Can it stand alone, or does it need a full version? If so, what would you recommend?
Also, what kind of girl do you picture when you hear it?

I think it should be a nickname for a full version. I recommend Melinda, which is a very pretty name.
I had a good friend who was named Melinda nn Mindy, so I always think of her when I hear the name. She was talkative, outgoing, friendly, and like many people who are very talkative, she was a poor listener, she was dynamic, very funny, analytical (sometimes too much so), blunt, energetic, and a real people person. I can't hear the name Mindy without thinking of her.
I remember that she once said that she hated the name Melinda and far preferred Mindy. She was always called Mindy and never Melinda. But I couldn't agree with her opinion on Melinda, I think it's very pretty, and if I wanted a Mindy, that's the full name I would definitely use.

To me Mindy sounds like the name of a very spoilt girl whose parents are rich. For an adult, Mindy seems like it would suit a wealthy stay-at-home wife.
It could work as a nickname for Miranda.

Mindy sounds like a warmhearted girl's name. I think it can stand on its own, but I like it better as a nickname. Melinda sounds more suitable for an adult. I don't think that Mindy is necessarily too childish for an adult, but a Melinda "Mindy" would at least have the option of going by a full name if she wanted to.
Ugh, I hate Mindy with a burning passion. To me it's too frothy, childish and simpleton. It's even worse than Misty, I think.
I'd hate it less if I found out it were a NN for Melinda but then I'd just really wonder why you wouldn't rather go by the much prettier/classier/timeless Melinda.
I picture a ditzy cheerleader who is sort of catty, has a "holier than thou" attitude and thinks everything in the world is going to come easy to her. But in the end, she drops out of community college, has 4 kids by 4 different men and works at the hardware store in her hometown.... which would totally be fine if she hadn't grown up looking down her nose at everyone "beneath" her
for the record, the Mindy I know in real life is sweet and normal enough, but it never has changed my opinion of the name

The Mindy I knew had a somewhat ditzy air, though she wasn't really ditzy, could sometimes be catty, sometimes had a "holier than thou" attitude, but she realized that about herself and was working on overcoming it, and never went to college. She had 4 kids but only by two different men. The eldest had a different father than the other three, and actually, Mindy was not sure who the father of her eldest was...it could have been any one of three different men. She worked, not at a hardware store, but at a cafe, which is about on a par with a hardware store. And she did grow up looking down her nose at everyone "beneath" her, but that was something she was working on, too. All in all, your impression is quite accurate when it comes to my friend Mindy.
We've lost touch. I really miss Mindy.

I don't like Mindy...I think it sounds childish and kind of down-class. I really like Melinda a lot though, it is a very pretty name and the full version I'd recommend.
I imagine a Mindy as a middle aged, bleach blonde hair, bright pink lipstick kind of woman. I imagine a Melinda as a quiet, homey girl/woman. The only Melinda I know is about two years younger than me, quiet, studious, and sweet. I've never known a Mindy.

My best friend is Mindy. Her full name is Melinda Erin, which I think is so pretty. I think Mindy can stand on its own but much prefer Melinda. I can't really think of another name that would work as a full name for Mindy, I think Minerva is ugly and Mindy as a nn for it is a stretch. Maybe, but only maybe, Miranda?
Pam Dawber, that's what I picture. Agh, I am becoming irrelevant! [echoes into the past] Zooey Deschanel is sort of like Pam II. Unreal!
But no, Mindy is just a nickname for Melinda so I picture Melindas. Softspoken and wry divorcee, long salt and pepper hair, who dresses really nice for work. And it reminds me of Cindy, which is a little bit aggressive and witty, so a dash of that for calling herself Mindy.
I'm not into it as a first name standing alone. It seems a little too girlish. I would rather be Melinda called Mindy than just Mindy.

I see Zooey as more of an Ali MacGraw. Perhaps it's the Manic Pixie Dream Girl thing.
