It was very common before 1950s and it's become quite rare now. I personally don' know any kids under 15 that are juniors (I do know several girls that were given the feminine form of their father's name and honoring (great)grandparents is common).
We have the added problem of not using middle names, Jr. or Sr. or numbers in names, so differentiating between people with the same name is hard.
