[Opinions] Petra
Thoughts? Middle name suggestions? (would really appreciate this)
I love it. Petra makes me think of the beautiful old city in Jordan, "rose red city half as old as time", and a very close mother-figure to me is named this, but the Nameberry forums were not helpful. People either senselessly hated it or loved it without giving criteria. I decided I trust BtN more. Posters here always have interesting comments or mn suggestions.

I love Petra, but it is super hard to combo for me! I usually end up putting it with longer traditional names and not being satisfied with it. Petra is so sharp and chic that I want to pair her with a balancing, calm name but then it looks or sounds funny. But when I put a similarly "cool" name in there, it seems to take some of Petra's unique beauty away. So frustrating!

I think Petra is beautiful. It's got a lovely root name in Peter, but the sound is so different from most other names out there, and it actually feels kind of old in a beautiful mystical way. (I know that seems over the top, but it's true imo) It never hopes to have someone close to you as a good influence on your opinion of the name.
My current combo is Petra Tiffany, which is obviously high contrast.
Other ideas:
Petra Eleanor
Petra Fabienne
Petra Magnolia
Petra Mercy
Petra Melanie
Petra Rosaleen
Petra Tamsin
Petra Blythe

wow gross worst name EVER
I actually don't have much to say about Petra, other than that I like it but can't ever use it (form of my surname). It's not frilly and it's not, like, butch either. I think of Petra, Jordan, too (and the stone city, which, is, wow, really beautiful). It also makes me think of petrified wood.
The only combo I have for it is Petra Cosima.
Oh and I once met someone who pronounced it PEET-ra and I thought that was pretty terrible

Not my thing. It reminds me of the word petrol.
It's one of those names that has potential, but I just can't stop adding "-fied" to the end of it. Or thinking of pets.
It makes me think of the city too; never been there, but a photographer friend of mine has the most amazing dawn-over-Petra photos. It's strong and unfrilly but feminine, and I like it a lot.

I'm sorry, but I REALLY HATE THIS NAME.
It's not the least bit pretty or charming to me, and it reminds me of a nasty old witch: PETRA, THE WHITE-HAIRED CRONE. I just...I can't. I can't like it.
I agree that Nameberry is totally useless. I've only been there a couple of times, but it seemed to be nothing but a lot of wanking- very little discussion. It's boring.

Peter is my #1 for a boy. So I'm hardwired to love Petra. She makes it easy by being to effortlessly elegant. Love, love Petra.

I personally love it. I think it's a little rough around the edges and definitely not a frilly name, but I like that. I've never met anyone named Petra before either, and I think that's a plus. It's not unheard of, but it isn't totally common either. It's a real name with history and that makes it respectable.

I like Petra. It's clearly feminine but isn't too frilly or insubstantial. It's simple to spell and pronounce and not too popular, but not too out-there either. It fits my criteria perfectly!

I adore Petra; it's peppy but dignified, fun but feminine and it ages very well. It's also far from overused.

I've liked Petra for a few years now but a few months ago it really dawned on me how much I like it and that I might actually consider using it for a daughter some day. Petra is has a short sound that I like but it's also rather sweet and spunky. I like that it's not too popular but yet it's not totally uncommon. It's nice that is has the strong meaning "rock" and could be used to honor someone named Peter (or even the surname Peters) but yet it has a more pleasing sound with the softer E sound in the beginning. I also think it would age quite well from little girl to grown woman.
My current favorite Petra combo is Petra Felicity because it balances strength and softness, and both names are rather spunky.

It's pleasant and not overused... both of which are points in its favour. Makes me think of an old Christian rock band, but it's not a bad association 'cause they were a good band... an a lot of the younger kids now may have no clue who they are...
