[Surname] Re: Petlev or Petlevski or Petlevnik
All these names may be related either to Slavic ПѢТЬΛЪ (Bulg. петел) - cock (male hen) or to Slavic ПEТЬΛIA (Russ. петля) - loop.

The spelling Petlevski is Macedonian, Petlev probably Bulgarian. Macedonian surnames have been subject to the whims of of dominating foreigners, so Petlev might be a Bulgarian surname or a surname of Macedonians living within the borders of Bulgaria.

The surname I am most interested in finding information about is Petlev. Where can I find more information about this name? What I do know genealogically is the family immigrated to the USA from Russia. Was told the name was originally Petlevnik and the "nik" was dropped in the United States. Not sure if there is evidence to support that or not. Also curious about the Cyrillic spelling of the name if you know.

As Jim mentioned, Petlev definitely seems to be Bulgarian as you can see at tinyurl.com/bpgy3ml. The Cyrillic spelling is Петлев.
