Scott's novel "Ivanhoe" there are two heroines, a British girl called
Rowena and a Jewish girl called
Rebecca. Lovely names. I tried my best to read the book, but the world has moved on and I couldn't get very far at all. However, apparently
Scott pretty well invented
Rowena, basing it on
Rhonwen (I think. Or Ronwen) and changing it to fit current fashions -
Susannah rather than
Susan, for instance.
