It is pronounced "el-VEE-rah" in Sweden. I think this spelling is closer to the original Spanish spelling than "el-VYE-ra".
I think Elvira is on the rise in Sweden.

I say el-VI-ra
And I've known people who pronunced it that way. El-veer-ah is really pretty, though

lol! no way - listen to this, about the American Elvira:
There was a TV personality named 'Elvira' (el-VYE-rah, btw) and she was a super vampy campy goth vixen who did silly horror movies and stuff like that.
And - get this - her real name was Cassandra! Insane, lol
here's her IMDb page:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005308/
That's who I think of when I see that name! She was HUGE in her day (at least in the states)! Especially the late 80's, early 90's when she was on MTV, SNL, had her own show and made several movies!
"Chan eil tuil air nach tig traoghadh"
"Maybe surrounded by
A million people I
Still feel all alone
I just wanna go home
Oh I miss you, you know"

I remembered! That's why I mentioned it :)
That and because my sister is Cassandra (Cassie) and she just about DIED when she learned that was Elvira's real name (she was about 10 at the time lol). Not exactly an association she was wanting but we both found Elvira pretty cool :)
Elvira, Mistress of the Dark is very American Pop Culture :) lol

I agree. Elvira (el-VEER-a) Madigan is my frame of reference.
I think it's a beautiful name.
I think it's a beautiful name.
Mozart's Piano Concerto #1 which has been affectionately dubbed the 'Elvira Madigan' because of the movie, is what comes to mind when I hear Elvira. The piece is beautiful, making Elvira seem more amiable because of the association.
I also prononuce it 'el-VEER-ah'. There is, most unfortunately, a Statler Brothers song called 'Elvira' (el-VEYE-rah) which drives home the aforementioned pronunciation. I don't find that pronunciation appealing in the least.
