I just met a girl named this the other day. All I could think of was the book "Clan of the Cave Bear" (not a bad association for me). But now I'm starting to like it.
Any opinions?

I've loved this name and have since I was about eight; I had a friend on my soccer team named Ayla (btw: she had a brother named Drexel). When I have children (which won't be for another, hmm, 15-20 years or so) one of my daughters will DEFINITELY be named this. :)

I don't get the same association. Aila (pronounced the same) is a traditional Finnish girl's name. Isla (pronounced as Ayla) is a Celtic name. And Ayla also exists as Hebrew and Turkish names. Certainly not a "made-up" name.
I think Ayla is a very pretty name, and I would not let the heroine of a novel stop me from using it.

Even though Ayla of Earth's Children (the series' name) is the Queen of Published Mary Sues, I still like the name. I do think it sounds trendy, but it's not popular yet, so it's alright to me. And trendy -la names at least have the benefit of sounding far less cutesy to me than trendy -lee/-leigh/-ley/etc. or -lyn/-lynn/etc. names.
But, just to avoid the taint of Sueage, I'd specifically take Ayla from the Jewish or Turkish origins for my daughter.

I see your point about the "Sueage," and the potential popularity and trendy feel. I would never use the name on a real person for that reason.
The book association comes first to me as I have all the books in the series, and that's where I first heard the name.

Clan of the Cave Bear is a bad association for me, so I see no good in the name, I'm afraid. It'll blend in with all the other -ayla girls and sound very, very late-90s when she's older.
