I like the spelling Sylvia. I don't know why, I just think it looks better.
I do like it, and I love Sylvie as a nickname. However, I wouldn't use it because we have a family friend called Silvia. Also, she's an old lady so it would be kind of weird to me if I used it on a child.
Due to the afforementioned person, I imagine Silvia to be an older woman, but quite willowy and sweet. That's the only association I have really. However, I consider Sylvie to be much younger sounding than Sylvia.
