Do you like Jethro? Are you able to shake the quirky popular association?

Jethro used to be a guilty pleasure of mine, although I've gone off it a little now. I don't know if it would work in real life but it's not dreadful. I don't really have a strong popular association with it. The only thing I can think would be the band Jethro Tull

I LOVE the name Jethro and would consider using it in the future should I have another DS at some point. It's not popular at all here in Australia, which appeals to me. Not sure how much DH likes it though!

Jethro will forever remind me of country bumpkin, Jethro Bodine, of the "Beverly Hillbillies." I'm afraid it's forever tarnished in this country the same as the name Jemima (although for different reasons). Having said that, it doesn't sound bad at all. In fact, my middle dd and her boyfriend are hoping to marry one day and name their ds Nathaniel "Jethro." I sincerely hope not because they're too young to even talk that way and I'd really hate to have a grandson named Jethro. I can't begin to describe how much I'd hate that! Perhaps if someone famous named their offspring Jethro and eased the name into the public consciousness that might alleviate some of the down home feeling associated with the name. Otherwise, I don't see it happening any time soon. It's a shame because it like Jemima are actually nice names.ETA that it's not just the hillbilly association that bugs me. It's the dumb hillbilly association that is such a turn off.

I just remembered...Last year on one of those shows like America's Dumbest Dumb-asses, they had video of a guy doing some stunt with a shopping cart where he, i forget, landed on his butt in an empty swimming pool? His name was Sethro. And the voice-over guy said something like "Do not attempt this stunt at home, especially if you are named Sethro."

See??? Do you think the dumbness is passed down through the name? LOL. And Sethro, seriously?

Hm. I should like him. I usually go for -o endings on boys. But I don't think I can shake the association, sorry.

I absolutely adore Jethro! I enjoy the quirky popular association.

I don't have any TV associations, probably because I have not been a TV watcher for a couple of decades.I associate it with Jethro Tull and "death row" and I don't like the throw sound at the end of it. It sounds very Southern and archaic to me, like Enoch, or Jedidiah or Ebenezer. I don't want to say redneck but it does evoke a .... provincial? insular? olden-American? sort of image. It's the opposite of classy and sophisticated. lol. Whatever, it's still usable and is conceivably softspoken and dignified. It just has some baggage.

I associate to Jethro Tull (the band), but that's not negative. It's a rather cool name, but I don't like the lisping "th" sound in it.

I think of the Midianite priest in the Bible who was the father of Zipporah. I've never heard of anyone else called Jethro.I think it's an acceptable name, but I don't really care for the sound. It does seem rather old-fashioned, and it rhymes with "death row".

It remind me of Leroy Jethro Gibbs from NCIS, a tv show I used to love. But no...I don't like Jethro. It sounds extremely dated and its quite ugly honestly.

I like it a lot after seeing a documentary about the prophet Jethro. However, I can't shake the hickish associations so I would not recommend it.

I don't like it. I don't associate it with anything, I just don't like the way it sounds.

Starts humming Dueling Banjos. It's a name that makes me think of rednecks who make moonshine.

No, I couldn't shake it. I grew up watching "The Beverly Hillbillies", and Jethro will forever be a big lunkhead swimmin' in the ce-ment pond.

Which association is that?I can only think of Cousin Jethro on the Beverly Hillbillies, who was not quirky. He was just dumb. No, I don't like the name Jethro. Even without the TV character, it sounds like a dumb hillbilly.

I know you're trying to communicate SOMETHING when you post, but all I hear is..."bratty bratty BRATTY bratty. Bratty BRATTY!"

YOU asked what we thought - so don't get all pissy when we tell you

that was uncalled-forAnd it says a whole lot more about you than it does about me or anybody else.
You asked for my opinion. I gave it. I just didn't happen to think you meant quirky in the way it's usually mean. If I misunderstood what you meant by that word then I'm sorry, but I'm not going to apologize to you for anything else in that post.

No. I hate it. It will always sound like a dim-witted country bumpkin hillbilly to me and actually, Jethro Bodine isn't even the first character I think of - It's Gibs from NCISUgh, I just really dislike this name, the sounds aren't even nice

NCIS? You WATCH that garbage? :-\I had to once for a report for my social psychology class on TV violence. It was like looking into the American abyss. I actually like the sounds of Jethro, and I am a composer. Oh, well, to each his or her own.

Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning. That is all I have to say.

That was rude. You want to see a brat, go look in the mirror.

Um, I've seen the show enough to know that that's Gibs' middle name but it's not like I TIVO it. And considering there are very few association for Jethro in general, yeah, that one sticks out. I'm not going to try to defend it because it is pretty garbage but I am offended by your reaction. Snap judgement much?
