1. Melanie. I find it pretty. I don't find Mallory pretty at all. It makes me think of marshmallows. Also the first syllable, "Mal", makes me think of words such as "malcontent" and "maladjusted." Melody is pretty, but to me it doesn't have as much dignity as Melanie, as it's a word name, and it always strikes me as a name that would only be used by people who have more of a vested interest in music than the average person.
2. Favorite: Melanie. Second favorite: Melody. Least favorite: Mallory.
3. I would imagine the parents of a Melanie to be well-educated, upper middle class people. I would imagine the parents of a Melody to of a lower socio-economic status than the parents of a Melanie, and to be amateur musicians. I would imagine the parents of a Mallory to be people who had to deal with a teen pregnancy. I don't have any images of what a girl with any of the three names would be like, as, of course, it would have been the parents who gave the name, not the girl. Melanie makes me think of Melanie in "GWTW", which is pretty common, and Mallory makes me think of the girl in "Family Ties." A show in which the parents were aging hippies. Which is why maybe I think of it as a name that a young, immature person would give.
4. Ha, well, I know one Melanie. This Melanie was born a male and is still genetically a male, but is in the process of becoming a female. One of those people who always felt that they were born the wrong gender. The name given this person at birth was John, but when she decided to become a female, she chose a female name, and the name she chose was Melanie. However, she is always called Mel. I can't help feeling that she chose a female name that would lend itself to a masculine-sounding nickname, so as to ease the transition. The first time I met her, she was introduced to me as "Mel", and she looked very obviously to me a male. Well, she is still genetically a male, actually, at that time, a few months ago, had not even begun the physical transition. So I thought, "A guy. A guy named Mel. Okay." Then I heard everyone referring to her as "she" and "her" and got mighty confused for a little while. Then the situation was explained to me, and it was explained to me that, though she hadn't begun the physical transformation yet, she was living as a woman. Okay. So that's the only Melanie I've known! Always goes by Mel.
I've never known a Melody or a Mallory.
