I also pronounce it the German way, and I like it a lot. I picture an Joachim as someone intense and passionate, maybe a little prickly and hard to connect with, but not unkind.
The English pronunciation bothers me enough that I wouldn't personally use Joachim as anything other than a middle name (plus, okay, I have a Noah, and Noah + Joa= namefail), but I have yet to make it work in any combo. I'm stuck admiring it from afar.
