[Opinions] Birth Announcement
An acquaintance of mine just had a baby whose name is Pearl. I don't know her middle name, but I'm really pleased with Pearl. WDYT?

That's a wonderful choice.
Well... first: congrats to your friend on the baby! Second: I'm glad they chose an actual, pre-existing name that is easily recognizeable yet not in popular usage. Third...
I'm sorry, but I can't really get behind Pearl. I can't get the old lady image out of my head. And this is coming from a Gladys-lover!

Pearl is lovely! It's the name of my bunny :-)
I love Pearl - especially as a mn
Pearl seems to be getting a lot more use all of a sudden, thanks no doubt to the celebrities who keep endorsing it! I do like it, but prefer it for a middle name.
I love Pearl. It's so nice to see. I hope you find out the middle name!
I love Pearl. It is so refreshing.
I love it. Great choice. I'd love to see some of those old names, Pearl included, make a comeback.
Yawn.
Sorry. I just don't see the fuss about Pearl. Especially on this board, it's getting trendy to the point of annoyance.

I can't see giving Pearl, on a real life baby, a yawn. On a *real life baby*, that's the difference. I understand that Pearl is talked about a lot on the board, so you may be sick of seeing it here, but the board can be worlds away from real life. In real life, Pearl is far from popular. It fell to 700 in 1966 and left the top thousand in 1987. It re-entered the top thousand in 2007, at 990, and was 982 in 2009, 958 in 2010, and 813 in 2011. So it may be making a comeback, but it's surely not popular yet, at this time.
I'm bored with Rosalie from seeing it so much on the board, but if I heard of a real life baby being named Rosalie, I wouldn't give it a yawn, because Rosalie is not overused in real life. It's never been overused. It left the top thousand in 1988, re-entered in 2009 at 833, and in 2011 it was 547. It seems that it is making a strong comeback, but 547 is still not popular, and Rosalie has never even been in the top hundred. So, sick as I am of Rosalie here, I couldn't in good conscience say it's boring in real life.
Although a name may be disliked for many reasons, I can't see it being boring or a yawn for any reason other than popularity, and I think it's important to remember that popularity in real life and popularity on the board are two different things.

*shakes head*
I've seen it used as a middle name on quite a few new babies around here. It's starting to feel really annoyingly popular in real life in addition to on the boards.
