[Opinions] Re: Unusual or Counter-intuitive Nicknames
in reply to a message by Ismene
These aren't that counter-intuitive, just not the obvious nickname. Some of these I really like and others, meh:
Phoebe "Bee"
Susannah "Zanna" (and Alexandra)
Miriam "Mim" - I've seen this a couple of times
Genevieve "Evie", "Viva"
Antoinette "Nettie" or any other -ette name
Josephine "Effie", "Seph"
Magnolia "Nola"
Madeleine "Dell" / "Delle"
Jacoba "Cobie" (think How I Met Your Mother)
Margaret "Garrett" - kill me, though
Yasmin / Jasmine "Minnie"
Mehetabel "Mabel" - ??
Ottoline "Tolly"
Roxanne "Xan"
Diantha "Annie"
Sophia "Fee"
Zenobia "Nia"
Caroline "Carlo" - I saw this a bit in Malawi
Francesca "Chessie"
Bridget "Ridge" - I have a friend named this
Juliana "Lia"
Cecilia "Celie"
Eleanor "Lennie", "Lena"
Judith "Didi"
Pandora "Andie", "Andy"
Penelope "Nell"
eta: ooh, yours! I like:
Dominique - "Mini" prefer Minnie
Athena - "Thea"
Rose Miela - "Romy"
Mariposa - "Posy"
Theophilus - "Phil"
Isaac - "Zac" - would actually use this

Even though I'm not a fan of counter-intuitive nicknames, many of those are sensible to me, such as Bee for Phoebe, Zanna for Susannah, Celie for Cecilia, and Nell for Penelope. Each of those nicknames are within the name, if you know what I mean. Carlo, Ridge, Garrett, and Andie just seem odd.
I am also Fee (I spell it Fi and I also use Fia). It's short for Fiammetta, and the most intuitive you can get for my name. I've seen suggestions somewhere for nicknames like Mia and Amy, which kind of baffle me. Even Etta would make more sense.
