I don't think it's "horrifically ugly", but it does sound kind of awkward. I wouldn't ever use it and I get why some people don't like it.

I kinda like it...but...
In a way that involves very little actual liking. You know, it's like greige or comic sans or brown nail-varnish or those grandmother's curtains florid flower prints all the highstreet clothes are enamored with... it's completely hideous to an almost offensive degree, it lacks all sense of good taste or elegance, and yet has just enough plasticy artifice to remind you at 3a.am that good god, someone deliberately came up with that. And yes, 9 out of 10 times, it elicits horror but there's still those moments where it's ugly-intriguing and weirdly compelling.
Eh, I like to put in the odd combo just to see if there's anything that works or transforms Aubrey form a tacky, awkward, gauche milksop of the name. Or you know, combos that are so squick that they're fun and lame and so-bad-they're-good and take on a splendor of their own. Or combos with a nice name, because I'm decidedly weird enough to appreciate the contrast and oddness of something great and something horrible together... from time to time. You know, a nice + horrible combo can sometimes be like... erm... drunk cooking... You know "I love ice-cream and hate gherkins, and this is drunken 2a.m gherkin sundae is revolting and oi... hands off, if I eat enough, I'll either be sick or start liking it. Either way, there's a kind of genius at work, a sick, warped one but still..." (erm...*cough*... I don't do that)... if any of makes sense?
Or maybe it's just me and my weird interest in awkward, unpleasant, dorky things...

I don't see it as obviously "horrifically ugly." I don't really have a negative or positive reaction to it. Ah, well, that is why we are different.

I hate the name Aubrey. I also hate the name Bre, Br'ee, Bree' etc.
It's just... So volatile as a name, that I want to yuck up whatever meal I barely ate.

I hate the name Aubrey with a passion, for either gender. The initial AWWW sound makes me sick. It literally makes me feel a little sick to my stomach. I'm repeating myself here, because I know I've posted this before, but it won't be a complete answer to your question if I don't say it:
I once worked with a young woman named Aubrey. She and I were just acquaintances, but we had a good mutual friend. The mutual friend would often talk about Aubrey to me, so I was frequently having to hear the name Aubrey spoken. And every time I did, I had a little sick stomach spell, lasting a few seconds. I had to endure having these sick stomach spells.
Now I have a great-niece named Aubrie, but because I live far from my family and don't have the means to visit them, I've never had to hear her name spoken,. I'd love to see my sister and my niece and meet my twin great-nieces, but I wouldn't look forward to hearing "Aubrie" spoken out loud.

I really don't understand the appeal. I think what irks me the most about it is how poorly it fits either gender; I find it too feminine for a guy, but too masculine for a girl. That and it just sounds really... I don't know, common to me.

I admit that I have always found it extremely drab--the beigest of names; devoid of passion, dowdy in a non-ironic way. It doesn't sit well with me at all (for either gender). I dislike the name intensely, and it leads me to segue to a further monstrosity: Aubrianna. Where I dislike Aubrey, I abhor Aubrianna extraordinarily. I do not think there exists another name which represents ugliness and brattishness so formidably.

I like it :P I love the soft Au-beginning. I like Autumn and Audrey for the same reason. They all make me think of trees, the early days of fall, pumpkins. I especially like Aubrey because of the -bree sound, it makes me think of a breeze on beautiful day in autumn. Corny, I know. I just really like it. I wish less people would use it and I really wish people wouldn't use Aubree.
I don't like it much on a boy even though I wouldn't mind meeting one at all. I prefer Auberon on a boy.
Haha I guess you didn't want to hear that so I will admit that it sounds trendy and that I hate how many spelling variants exist. It will probably also be dated and get confused with Audrey.

I get Audrey, but Aubrey? I agree, horrifically ugly. I'd rather name a kid Gertrude.
