I also just noticed this in a post a few days ago, I think it was listed on an Australian BA.
I think it's really cute, and pretty spunky! I think it's my favorite of the -ene names, and by favorite, I mean the ONLY one I like, haha!
I like the nn Max for a girl, as long as it's balanced out with the full, more feminine Maxine, like you said.
I don't think it's dated. It doesn't have much of an era association for me. Really cute though!
