Shortly after our marriage, since a baby wasn’t going to happen yet, Adam and I decided to adopt a dog. We thought we would get something small, since we live in an apartment at the back of my bookstore, but when we went to the weekend Adopt-a-thon our local shelter had we fell in love with a black Labrador-mix puppy named Lucy. She is already a gentle but fun-loving girl, and we know she’ll be great with our future children.
After almost a year of marriage, Adam and I decided to try for a baby. A few months later we were pregnant with the surprise of our lives—twins! We were shocked but thrilled, naturally, and we couldn’t wait to tell everyone. Right on time, Rosa Aviana and Owen Maxwell were born, middle names after my mother and Adam’s father. Rosa’s name jumped out at us at once, as she was born with a head of red curly hair. Her eyes, dark blue when she was born, turned hazel by the time she was eight months old. Owen was born with his daddy’s dark brown hair, though it was curly like mine when I was little, and his eyes turned to a rich brown like Adam’s too.
With two children who would need separate rooms and a dog who need a yard, Adam and I decided it was time to move. The bookstore was doing well, and Adam makes a good salary at his job at the hospital, so we were able to buy a big old house in a good family neighborhood. It has plenty of room for future children, a nice big yard, and though it needed some work we were able to make it ours.
Just two years after the twins were born, Adam and I welcomed another addition to our family—another daughter! Rosa and Owen were extremely excited about having a new baby sister, and the entire family helped us paint and decorate the new nursery. Lily Cecilia was born on a beautiful spring day that seemed to demand she be named after a flower. Though she has Adam’s dark brown hair color, it too is curly like mine used to be, and she has my exact blue eyes. Rosa and Owen love her, and so does Lucy, who will come lay her head on the bouncer or lay at the edge of the blanket when we lay her on the floor.
Adam was driving home after a late night at the hospital and was hit by a drunk driver. The car accident left him with a broken leg, a concussion, and bruised ribs, but we were all just grateful he came out of it without anything more serious.
Adam, after joining a private pediatrics practice after his residency, has worked at the lower end of the totem pole since starting. Finally, after four years, he has been promoted! It comes with more responsibility, but also better benefits and a nice pay raise. Adam is finally working exactly where he has always wanted to.
Rosa, our adventurer, climbed up too high in a tree and fell, breaking her arm. Though we were all shaken by the event and she cried and screamed enough to break our hearts, once she was in her cast everything was fine. She couldn’t wait to show it to everyone at school, and all of her friends signed it for her. After six weeks she was good as new, and Owen was asking for his own cast!
When Adam was picked to go to a conference in Washington D.C., we decided to take the kids with us and make a vacation out of it. Though they were too young to care about the historical value of what they were seeing, they loved the museums and the zoo and thought the buildings and statues were cool. Adam and I decided that maybe a return trip should be saved for when they’re a bit older and can appreciate everything more.
With Lily entering kindergarten, Adam and I decided that it was a good time to try for one more child. After just a few months we were pregnant. Owen sort of hoped it would be a boy, but he was nevertheless happy when it was revealed to be a girl. We let the kids help pick the flower name; with two daughters named for flowers the third one certainly had to be. They came up with Jasmine, which we made her middle name. For her first name we chose Sophie, a name Adam and I had considered for Lily and both loved. She was born with black wavy hair, much like Adam’s mother’s, and wound up with the same hazel eyes as Rosa. Lily at first didn’t want to leave her after she was born, insisting that I needed her help with Daddy at work all day, but she loves school and was quickly convinced that I could handle it on my own.
A very sad event hit our family this year. My grandmother, a sweet woman we all adored, died at the age of 86, losing her battle with cancer. It wasn’t a shock, but it was extremely sad for all of us. We all traveled to the funeral, even baby Sophie. She was not a rich woman, but she left a little something to every grandchild and great-grandchild in high school or college, to help pay for their educations, not even forgetting our Sophie, the youngest of the family. Her belongings, per her request, were distributed among all of us. We will all miss her, and we all cherish these keepsakes to remember her by.
