While it is acceptable, I don't particularly like this spelling at all... While the name feels boring to me due to overuse, it is acceptable and my preferred spellings are Catherine, Kathryn and Katherine. Changing the e to an a or just omitting it completely w/ the ine spellings somehow just doesn't look right. Kathryn is at least different enough as a whole that the omitted e is expected. Cathryn would look awkward to me though, for some reason... prob'ly the same way Cate looks awkward to me.
