[Opinions] Destry
This name has been on my mind a lot lately so I decided to post about it. What do you think of Destry for a girl? It could also be used for a boy and derived from a surname. It's the name of Steven Spielberg's daughter and there's a classic western movie in which one of the characters is named this.
Have you ever met one in real life? Do you think it's trendy? Do you see any images or colors when you hear it?

I think it suits the character in the Western really well. It sounds cowboyish. Flannel-y, dark-hued, with a large horizontal motion.
Not so great as a girl's name IMHO. It seems in the same vein, style-wise, as using McKenzie for a girl. Only less popular. Also reminds of Destiny ... trendy-style, yeah.
If it were Destrie I would probably feel a tad better about it.
If it were Dextrie I would probably feel two tads better about it.
If it were D'Estrée pronounced deh-TRAY, or even D'Estree or Destree pronounced like Destry, I would not feel particularly better about it, but it would seem far more interesting.

I love Hadley :P Hmmm I never thought of it as frilly at all. Interesting.
I don't care for Destry, sorry. It looks like an amalgamation of Destiny and Dusty with a little bit of "destroy" thrown in.
I've never met a Destry. It's a little trendy, in that it fits in well with the surname trend, but it's also rare. The only image it brings to my mind is Steven Spielberg's face.

I've posted about this name before...but for a boy :) I guess I could see it on a girl also. I've never met or heard of one IRL. It does seems very "cowboy(girl)ish" but I tend to like names like that
After learning from you that it was a character in a western movie, I can see it all western-y and not trendy and made-up and a bit trashy like I originally have felt it was. I've only met one before, and that was the only time I'd heard it. She was probably born in the late 80s. I don't really get any clear image from it, and the color mixture is kind of muddy and garbled. It feels a bit frilly to me too. But if I force myself to think along the western lines, it makes me think of cowgirls, which is better.

more on the name and the meaning
It was my username ages ago after I met a girl named this and liked it. I tried to get more information on it. Nameberry says it means "war horse" but that's probably wrong. I got this when I posted on the name facts board and it makes sense to me:
Destry is a small commune in the Moselle region not far from Metz. This may be the origin of the surname, which shows up in French records as far back as 1606.
Other 17th-century spellings are d'Estree and D'Estrie, which makes me think it's probably related to the French word for east, and isn't connected with destrier, which is an Old French Latin-derived term for a warhorse.
Just in case anyone's interested ;)

That was me - glad I made sense.:)
Objectively, I think Destry has an attractive sound. But it was a man's surname, in the film, and it starts with Des, so it seems kind of masculine. The only girly association I can come up with for it is that it looks a little bit like Destiny! - and that ruins it for me.

Ahhhhh thanks :)
The only Destry I know is female so I guess that's why it seems feminine to me.

I don't mind the sound of Destry. And I think I prefer it for a girl. But visually, it bothers me that it is only one letter away from the word "destroy".
I've never met a Destry.
It feels like it would be trendy, but I word trend implies that there'd have to be a spike in usage. So far as I know, it's hardly ever used...
