[Opinions] Luka on a girl?
What do you think of the name Luka for a girl? I love the sound of it, though I know it's typically a boy's name, but I feel like it could work well on a girl because of the a ending. I also like the nickname Lu too. Any opinions are welcome!

I like it much better on a girl than on a boy which could be due to the fact that Luca is super common here on boys and it is boring to me. On a girl Luka seems fresh and more exciting. Also the -a ending makes it more feminine to me.

No, I don't think that would be tasteful.

I love Luka as a boys name and as much as I don't like seeing boys names "lost" to the girls, I can't really think of a good reason that Luca couldn't be used on a girl. I can totally see the appeal. But only the c spelling. The k one looks masculine.

Love it - enormously - as a girl's name.

I don't like the name on either sex, but I think it's okay for a girl. The first time I heard of Luka was when the Suzanne Vega song (probably the reason I don't like the name) came out, and I remember being surprised when I learned it was a male name. I think Luka looks more masculine and Luca more feminine, probably because the former is visually similar to Luke and the latter to Lucy.

I quite like Luca on a girl, spelt only Luca :)

I know a female LucaAn ex-girlfriend of one of my cousins. She was from somewhere... maybe Hungary or Croatia since the database says it's feminine there.I think Luka looks masculine, but Luca I wouldn't mind on a girl.

The female Luca is pronounced 'LOO-tzah' (short from Lucija). Luka is exclusively male here.

Then maybe she was Hungarian? I'm not sure where she was from, I didn't really talk to her, was just introduced to her! She did pronounce it LOO-ka, just like Luka.

It's the same in Hungarian. I think that she probably just went with the easier pronunciation in English (or maybe her parents named her Luca and intended the Italian pronunciation). There are plenty girls named Luca in English-speaking countries, after all (and names like Misha, Nikita, etc.).

NO! Leave it for the boys! There are actual female names like Lulu, Lula, Lani, Lila, Lily, Lilia and so on that are wonderful on girls. Like I said, leave it for the boys!

I guess the Suzanne Vega song "Luka" has gotten old enough that people don't think of it. I always think of it when I hear Luka-on-a-girl (because of Vega's very feminine voice singing "My name is Luka"). "Luka" is a victim of child abuse in the song. Not a good association.Anyway, I think it's not as good on a girl as Micah is, but it would work okay. It's more like using Noah or Ezra on a girl IMO. Not my style, but doesn't feel bizarre or mannish like so many other man-names on women do.

Love Luca on a boybut I can see it working on a girl as well, especially as a nickname for Lucia or Luciana or something similar. I remember when the Susannah Vega song came out there was a big debate about whether it was a girl or boy's name, so I think it could work for either. and even though I usually dislike unisex names, this one doesn't bother me, but I'd never use it for a girl personally.

I don't particularly like Luka on either gender, but can understand how it could sound like a feminized version of Luke and could have some appeal that way, but at the same time, I think it should be left for the boys... Though I'd prefer Luke or even Lucas (I don't really like Lucas, but prefer it to Luka which feels like something's missing). There are so many nice ligit girls' names that there's no need to snag another boys' name and pin it on a girl... though, if one must, perhaps Luca could be used as a nn for Lucinda and then when she grows older, she could decide if she wants to continue w/ the nn or go by Lucinda or Lucy.

Why not?It sounds unisex to me. I can see it working for either sex.

I don't want to like it (we have to keep some of those -a's for the boys!) but I really do; Lu/Lulu as a nickname is super cute. I think if I were to use it I would make it a nickname for Lucia, but you can totally get away with it.

Love the sound of it. I think it works on a girl as well. Lulu is cute for the nickname.
