[Opinions] Emeric and Leopold
What do you think of these are? Could they work or are they too weighty?I love the sound of Leopold. It's off-beat but familiar, and there's Leo to fall back on. It's regal sounding to me. But I feel like it still registers as sort of comically pretentious with some people. I how Emeric is divided sound-wise - beginning with the Em-sound that's so popular for girls and then ending in the aggressively masculine -ric. Is it too unfamiliar? And is there another spelling that you'd prefer? Emmerich I'm not fond of, but I'm not sure if Emeric is perfect.Opinions?

I love both of these names! They do not sound weighty or pretenious to me. They are strong, regal, yet they are not overpowering.

I love Leopold, and the nickname Leo! I really like Emeric. I think it'd be pretty high on my list if Emrys wasn't my top boy name.

Don't like Emeric at all, but Leopold has grown on me this past year... Sounds kinda pretentious, but kinda nice at the same time. Emeric is just kinda unattractive.

I adore Emeric. I first came across the name from Emeric Pressburger (sp?), a filmmaker from 1940's Britain. I fell in love with his work and well as his name. Bonus!I prefer Emeric too, although Emmerich is fine in my book. Surprisingly, I think most people would have an easier time with the Emmerich spelling, at least here in the U.S. But I still prefer the zippier French version.Leopold has had a special place in my heart from childhood. Bugs Bunny cartoon character does a bit where he's an orchestra conductor, modeled on Leopold Stokowski. As Bugs walks somberly up to the front the various orchestral members whisper over and over in amazement, "Leopold!" It was the first time that I heard the name and the grandeur of it mixed with the comedy of Bugs Bunny guaranteed that I would love it forever. Plus, the obvious nn Leo makes it very usable in the real world.

I love Leopold too, for all the reasons you stated. Even the comic pretensiosness part. Leopold makes me smile, and I like smiling.Emeric is neat. It's got a fun medieval flair to it - it sounds like a little knight. I don't think it's too unfamiliar... not for me, anyways. I do like Emmerich, but Emeric seems like the most user-friendly spelling, unless you shorten it even further to Emric. But then it loses some of its appeal :(

I definitely think Emeric can work. I actually find the Em- beginning endearing, and the -ric ending noble. I really like it. It is unfamiliar, but the pronunciation is pretty intuitive, and if you name your child Emeric, the unfamiliarity for people kind of fades when they meet him, if you know what I mean. Leopold, on the other hand, does seem pretentious to me. It would be nice as a middle name. I actually think it sounds better on musical instruments than children (especially violas, because of the regal sound, but I'm biased, lol). It actually reminds me of upholstery a little bit.

I like Emeric. The -ric part sounds very masculine, so I don't think that it would be problematic to use this name. Emmett, which also contains the Em- sound, is used regularly for boys, and I haven't heard anyone say that it seems too feminine. Emeric sounds even more masculine than Emmett.Emeric isn't too strange to use. It at least contains familiar elements (Em- and -ric), so I don't think that most people would find it too unfamiliar.Of the two names, Emeric seems the less weighty of the two. I've never really thought of Emeric as being a weighty name. Leopold has more of a weighty feel. As you pointed out, Leopold has the nickname Leo to fall back on, which isn't too weighty, so that balances things out. I like how Leopold is off-beat and regal sounding, but I don't really like the -old part.

I like Leopold, and Leo is a great nickname. I do agree that some people might find it pretentious. For example, I mentioned this name amongst my (non-name-nerd) friends yesterday and they all said it sounded like a made-up posh name. "Who's called Leopold nowadays" for example. I like it though!Emeric is OK, but I don't like it so much.
