I think it's pretty in a no-nonsense kind of way. It doesn't seem plain to me, though.
I don't know many Joannas. I've encountered more people named JoAnn/Joanne, etc. than I have people named Joanna. I can think of two Joannas I've actually known - one is about 24 and the other is around 25 or 26. One of them was born in the U.S., and the other was born in the Philippines but moved to the U.S. when she was a little girl. It's not overly popular where I live.
