1930: Giovanni has gotten a job at a meat packaging plant and they have found a small two bedroom apartment over a small deli where Violetta works for extra money. She was very excited to learn she was pregnant, but Giovanni missed his family, and started to wish they could raise their little one in Italy. Only a week later, Giovanni's family sent news that Giovanni's mother, who was very sick, has gotten much better, and can now walk around and annoy the neighbors again and her usual loud volume, instead of having her grandkids deliver letters!
Giovanni can barely remember what his mother sounded like shouting at the neighbors. But, soon the baby is born a girl! She is a very loud crier, and the couple names her Luisa Nicoletta. Luisa for Giovanni's mother (they were going to do that anyway) and Nicoletta because 1) they think she should have a middle name to fit in better (obviously, Giovanni and Violetta don't have MNs) and 2) because it's the name of Giovanni's little sister who died when she was seven. Giovanni and Violetta immediately send word home and they decide to build a crib themselves and carve messages to their children from those back home on the bottom.
