Help[Opinions] Gisela
What is your impression of this name? Do you like it or not? I'm not speaking of Gisèle, but Gisela specifically.

Unusually for me, I far prefer the French version to the German. GHEE like the Indian clarified butter? Not really! And Gisèle is such a wonderful ballet.

I was a bit neutral about Gisela and its related forms until I met my aunt's mother named Gisela. It really grew on me, and I especially like it with the German pronunciation (like my aunt's mother). I see it as a bit of a classic in Europe, but here in the US it is fresh and rarely used.

It sounds nice enough. However, I'd feel strange giving a child a name that meant hostage.

I don't like it, especially if pronounced jizz-EL-ah. I hate the jizz sound in the beginning of those names, because of a reference to a certain male bodily function. If it's pronounced with a hard G sound in the beginning then that's better.

It's pretty and I like the spelling a lot better than Giselle, but I can't see it on a little kid at all.

Ghislaine is pronounced zheez-LEN, isn't it? Because it's French?

Ghislaine is pronounced with a hard "g" sound at the beginning even in French. That "h" after the "g" keeps it hard. You would be correct if not for the "h."
I saw a French movie with a minor character named Ghislaine and that's how it was pronounced. I know the BtN link says otherwise. I don't know what to say about that. Perhaps another poster can help us out.
