Help[Facts] origin of said surname
I came across this ancestor's name as "Peaudechate". Possible French origin.
It also says dit "Laforce" as an extension of said surname french meaning:lived near a fortress or stronghold.Can someone tell me where dit the surname Peaudechate came from and when historically did it start. The full name of this person is Francois Joseph Peaudechate dit Laforce born in early 1700's possibly France.Thanks for any help.

From my knowlege of French I can tell you that peau means "skin" and chate looks like a variation of chat (cat). Peaudechate would then mean "cat skin." I'm no expert, though, so someone on the surnames board can verify that for you.
