It turned out that Breccan had followed Cecilia to Kyrn, and even after his beloved married another man and bore his child, he still loved her. He became the blacksmith's apprentice, posing under the name Philip Anthony. He had a natural talent at the forge, and the town wondered where this mysterious man had come from. Many a young Kyrnian woman fell in love with the blacksmith's handsome young apprentice, but Breccan's heart belonged only to Cecilia.
One day Breccan was sent to the royal palace to re-shoe the king's horses. It was during that trip that he ran into Cecilia and her daughter. Cecilia could not believe her eyes; she thought she had wandered into a dream. When she realized that it was not a dream -- that she was finally reunited with her long-lost love -- she was overjoyed. She and Breccan continued to meet in secret, which wasn't difficult, seeing as how Joseph Wilhelm was presently distracted by rumors of a plot against him.
But this distraction did not keep the king from noticing that his wife's mood was much improved. Of course, Cecilia knew the real reason, but Joseph Wilhelm mistook her sudden happiness for love. He believed he had finally won over her affections, and so he began asking for her more often. Some nights, Cecilia would feign illness and then rush to meet Breccan. But she was no fool -- she knew that to keep rejecting the king would end badly for her, and without her guidance, Genevieve would grow up to be as ruthless as her father. And so she obliged her husband and played the part of dutiful wife.
Yet a child never came. At first Cecilia told Joseph Wilhelm that she was recovering after Genevieve's birth, and for a time the king accepted this explanation. In truth, Cecilia had secretly been taking a contraceptive, for she could not bear the thought of giving Joseph Wilhelm another child when she loved Breccan so dearly. For two years Genevieve remained the sole heir to the throne. By this time, the rumors of a plot against Joseph Wilhelm had become full-blown truth: a faction of disillusioned noblemen and army officials had banded together and formed a powerful resistance to Tyrian rule. Joseph Wilhelm's advisors constantly reminded him that he absolutely must sire another legitimate child, for should the resistance triumph (the gods forbid!), they undoubtedly would kill the king and his daughter, thereby ending the Tyrian line that had ruled for generations.
Joseph Wilhelm threatened to execute Cecilia for failing to fulfill her duties as queen, and after the execution he would take a new, more suitable wife -- the alliance with Xolan be damned! And after more children were born, he would send Genevieve into exile in the east, for he would have no need for a daughter born of a disgraced wife. Fearing for the life of her only child, Cecilia acquiesced.
She soon became pregnant, and the king and his advisors were placated. But a war raged within Cecilia's heart, for she felt that she had betrayed Breccan once again.
The pregnancy seemed to progress faster than normal, and the court physicians soon discerned the reason why: Cecilia was carrying twins. Joseph Wilhelm was thrilled -- two babies meant more insurance for his line. Shortly after Genevieve's third birthday, Cecilia delivered two healthy girls, and the kingdom celebrated the births of the princesses with an extravagant week-long festival. Joseph Wilhelm named his daughters Augustine, after his deceased father, and Emmanuelle, after the Kyrnian goddess of fortune and prosperity. In his excitement, he also permitted Cecilia to choose a name for each of the girls, but he was stunned when she picked Philippa and Antonia, names which had not been used in Kyrn since the days of old. How was he to know that they honored Philip Anthony, aka Breccan Pike -- the man his wife loved.
