The First Meeting Leads to Big Things
Solomon Sexton was a student teacher in Catherine Brand's fifth grade class when he was twenty. Casey wasn't exactly the brightest kid in the world--she couldn't get past a D in anything--and Sol offered to tutor her.
Sol and Casey got along well. Very, very well. They always laughed and had fun during their tutoring sessions, and Casey seemed to learn a lot, too. These tutoring sessions became something Casey looked forward to, as did Sol. It was a joyous thing.
Little did they know how these harmless tutoring sessions would end up.
Five Years Later
On the eve of Casey's sixteenth birthday, her former student teacher and tutor arrived at her house, a grin on his face. Ever since he'd become a teacher at her high school--though when he was hired she wasn't in high school yet--Sol had caught sightings of Casey often. These sightings reminded him of how much fun she was to be around. He decided to find out where she lived and take her out for dinner as a birthday present.
When Casey's father, David Brand, opened the door, Sol smiled graciously and asked for Casey. Giving this younger man an odd look, David turned around and yelled out, "Catherine Justine Brand, get down here!"
Casey hurried down and found herself face to face with her favorite tutor--she'd had many in her time, sadly--as her face burst into a big, rather cheesy grin. "Mr. Sexton! Is it really you?" she asked. Grinning, Solomon nodded. "What on Earth are you doing here?" was Casey's next question. When Sol answered, Casey giggled. "You really came to take me out for dinner as a birthday present, Mr. Sexton? How sweet! Where are we going?" He told her they could go anywhere. Glancing down at his semi-fancy outfit and then down at her own very casual outfit, Casey grinned, announcing, "Let me go change so we can go to my favorite Italian restaurant." She quickly disappeared.
That first night was a hit--for both of them! Casey loved hanging out with her former tutor, now her friend, and Sol adored watching and listening and talking with Casey. Oh, that was the time of his life! And hers, too, of course.
Will You?
Sol became Casey's tutor once again soon after the birthday dinner. Being twenty-five and single still, Sol would ask for Casey's advice on girls for him. She would always start out with a funny, teasing one--someone who she knew Sol would hate--and then ended with a seemingly perfect match.
After months of tutoring went by, Sol started feeling a certain, familiar attraction to Casey. He tried to hide it from himself, knowing that it was more than just a little inappropriate for a teacher to have feelings for a student of his, but they just kept bugging him, popping up at the most annoying times. Eventually, he decided that he couldn't bear it any longer. He'd ask her.
Casey, too, was developing feelings towards Mr. Sexton. It was quite odd in her opinion. Why should she be attracted to a man who was ten years older than herself and one of her teachers? Most people would quickly scrunch up their noses and say, "No thanks!" then walk away as quickly as they could. They wouldn't even try not to be rude. They'd just do it without a single thought of the other's feelings.
One evening when Sol was tutoring Casey in math, he looked up to find her daydreaming. "What're you thinking about, Kitty-Case?" he asked, calling her his special nickname for her. "Anything in particular?" Teasingly, he added, "Anything having to do with the man sitting before you?"
Startled, Casey nodded. "Why, yes, actually." She blushed, her normally rather pale cheeks turning a dark crimson hue. Sol blinked back. "I- I was thinking about what it would be like to--" she paused, quite embarrassed by this time--"to... to spend my life with you. And- and be your kids' mom..." Why was she telling him this? It seemed so ridiculous to be telling her teacher, of all people, that she had feelings for him.
"D- do you mean--" Sol cut himself off. It couldn't be! "Do you mean that you feel that way, too?" This caused Casey's blush to deepen to even darker crimson as she nodded. Sol stared at Casey. Casey stared at Sol. What a weird experience! Taking a deep breath, Sol sighed, "Wow... that's a little..."
"...weird?" Casey finished for him. He nodded. She stood up and came around the table, snuggling up under his arms. "You know... this feels just right." He grinned at her, breathing in that familiar scent of her light and girly perfume. He loved it!
"Well... I, uh, want to ask, now that I know that you feel for me, too... I want to ask if you would... Do you want to see if this--" he gestured to the two of them--"works out?" he asked, sighing in relief as he finally gets the words out. He held his breath. What would her response be?
Her deep blue eyes lighting up and widening to the size of small saucers, Casey's grin grew from big to huge in a matter of seconds. "Oh yes, yes, yes!" she cried, nodding like crazy. What a dream come true! But then her face fell. "But we can't tell anyone. Not even my parents. They'd kill me if they found out I was dating you, and then they'd probably throw you out, too." Wouldn't that be awful!
The two made an agreement and set up a date, a time, and a place for their first official date. The twenty-five year old teacher and the sixteen year old student were now officially a couple.
Here Goes Nothing
On a Friday evening but a couple days after they decided they wanted to try it out, Sol and Casey met at a nearby grocery store. Sol picked Casey up with a cheery, "Hi, Kitty-Case. What's up?" He grinned as he opened the door for her, watching as she climbed in.
"Not much, Sexton," she responded, using his last name. As Sol had a nickname for her, she'd decided she needed one for him. She didn't feel right calling him something with his first name, so she used his last name. Period. It seemed to fit to her.
Once she was in and settled, Sol drove off to her favorite Italian restaurant--the same one he'd taken her to on the eve of her sixteenth birthday, not even a year ago.
Yikes!
During the summer before her senior year, Casey's parents decided to go on vacation, leaving their daughter at home alone. Without their permission, she stayed over at Sol's house the whole month they were gone. They had fun times, that month. Maybe a little too fun for a teacher and his student...
Soon after--about a month and a half to two months--Casey started feeling sick to her stomach. Oh, what an awful feeling! Eventually, after many days which turned into weeks of utter misery, she decided to secretly pick up a pregnancy test. When she did, it turned out as positive. Yikes! She was pregnant, of her own fault, by her teacher! This was so not the way she wanted to spend her senior year...
Their next date, Casey announced her big, frightening news. Sol's face turned pale. Extremely pale. It seemed almost whiter than porcelain. And that's pretty white! Casey's lips trembled with nerves. What would Sol do? What would he say? Would he tell her parents? Would he say he didn't want to go out with her anymore? It was all so nerve-wracking!
Sol drew Casey into his arms, squeezing her tightly, wiping away her tears. "Oh, Kitty-Case, I'm so sorry. It's all my fault. I should have restrained us. It wasn't right. I- I don't if I even should have let you stay." He took a deep breath. "You still want to do this?" he asked. Casey nodded. "Okay. It's working out smoothly, except for this one setback."
Luckily for Casey, when she went back to school, no one noticed, even when she started getting a little rounder. But then something happened.
Tears: Of Joy, Of Pain, Or Of Something All Together Different?
Casey's baby never made it out. He or she didn't survive. Casey had a miscarriage. When she found this out, she had very mixed feelings. Should she be happy? Should she be sad? Should she feel pained? Should she be something else? She didn't know. All she was at that point in time was confused. Very confused.
She told Sol as soon as she could. He paled once more, as he attempted in vain to hold the tears back. His first child... lost before he even saw the light of the brilliant day. What a sorrowful moment! He once again took Casey into his arms. He whispered, "I'm so sorry, Kitty-Case. I'm so sorry for everything."
Recuperating
Casey took some time off of her tutoring sessions with Sol, as well as time off from their dates. She didn't feel as if she would ever be able to walk out of her room again. Let alone see Sext--Mr. Sexton again.
It took poor Casey months--almost until her graduation--to cheer up. When Sol came with a bouquet of orchids--her favorite flower--just for her as "congratulations-you-just-graduated-from-tutoring" gift, she literally fell right into his arms. And right in front of her parents, too. This partly shocked, partly relieved them. Shocked: what on Earth was their daughter doing hugging a teacher? Relieved: at least she was socializing! A smile from Sol melted Casey's miseries away.
After that evening, Casey was back to her usual cheery self. Yes, she'd lost her baby. Yes, she'd been in mourning. But now the sun was out! Now the clouds were gone! Now the rain has dried up! Everything's back to normal. Or at least as normal as it can get for a senior who almost became a teen mom.
Down On One Knee... Sort Of
It was summer break before Casey's freshman year of college. She had taken a year off in between high school and college so as to earn the much-needed money. She was excited, for she had been accepted by the college she had always dreamed of going to. Oh, it was a glorious day!
She'd gone over to Sol's house to break the news to him: she'd be leaving him for four years, if not more. When she knocked on the door, no one answered. She tried again. And again. And again. After four tries, she tried to open the door. But it was locked, of course. Heading around back, she found Sol digging in the backyard. But it certainly wasn't gardening. He hired a professional gardener to do that for him.
"Hello, Solo-Sexton," she greeted him. Over the years, she'd developed a new nickname for him. Something which fit with Kitty-Case. "Whatcha doing?" she asked, leaning her elbows on his back and gazing into those gorgeous eyes of his.
Standing up halfway--and gently pushing her off his back--Solomon grinned. He opened his hands. Sitting in them was a small box. It wasn't anything really comely or beautiful. Just simple. Like him. He prodded her to open it up. Inside, Casey found the most beautiful ring she'd ever seen. Though her opinion was slightly prejudiced.
"Oh, yes, yes, yes, Solo-Sexton, I will!" she cried, throwing her arms about him. "I was going to go to college, but I guess I won't now, right?" She grinned. Getting married was definitely a bigger step to her than going to college!

Simple As A Daisy--And Just As White, Too
Almost six months later, Sol and Casey--Sol at twenty-eight and Casey at nineteen--were preparing for their wedding. They'd decided early on that it wouldn't be big or fancy. It would be something simple and cozy and friendly. And that's exactly how it was.
Sol's niece and nephew were the flower-girl and ring-bearer--and what an adorable sight they were! The two, twins, were dressed simply yet beautifully. As they walked down the aisle, preceding their uncle and soon-to-be aunt, the two grinned and grinned at all the guests. They really did welcome them, that's for sure.
When Sol slipped the ring on Casey's finger--a very simple yet beautiful ring--he grinned at her as she grinned back. This would certainly be a happy memory for them in their years together.

Here They Are Now
Now, only a few months after the wedding--they stayed home, with no honeymoon, thinking it an unnecessary expense--Sol and Casey Sexton are as happy as happy can be. Will this be a fairy-tale dream come true or will it be the bumpy thing life usually presents? Neither can wait to find out!
