I like Anna. It's one of those names that are simple, yet elegant. I think it's best when pronounced as AHN-na. I'm not fond of the AN-na pronunciation, which I find boring, flat and stale. As far as combos go, I think it's best when paired with a lush, classy, polysyllabic name:

I'm not sure what you mean by Anna variants, but I do like Emiliana and Christiana.
