Niamh and Sean O’Connor live in the Irish countryside. Niamh, age 24, is a journalist for her village’s newspaper and a blogger who chronicles her family’s farming life. Her husband Sean, age 27, is a fourth generation peat farmer and sheep herder. They do not live a glamorous life, but the townspeople respect them for their work ethic and religious devotion.
Year 1: Niamh and Sean O’Connor live near Sean’s parents, Mary and Eoin. Eoin is 55-years old and has farmed since boyhood. However, on a muggy July day, Eoin O’Connor’s tractor tips over, trapping him underneath. His wife discovers him in the early evening and rushes for help. Eoin survives his accident, but spends time in the hospital. He is released to recuperate from two broken femurs. Since Eoin is temporarily immobilized, Niamh and Sean move into the elder O’Connor home to manage the responsibilities the family farm.
DH: Sean (27)
DW: Niamh (24)
Year 2: Eoin O’Connor is able to walk, but only with the assistance of a cane and the impediment of a limp. He is depressed that he can no longer meaningfully contribute to farm life. Niamh decides to cheer her father-in-law up with the purchase of a canary from a shop in town. Eoin names the bird Melody, and its sweet music gradually brings a smile to Eoin’s face.
DH: Sean (28)
DW: Niamh (25)
Pet: Melody the Bird
Year 3: After a successful year working for the local newspaper, Niamh is promoted. Niamh’s boss recognizes her talent, realizing that she deserves more than two small columns in the daily paper. Now, Niamh often contributes headlining stories; her newfound success is a dream-come-true.
DH: Sean (29)
DW: Niamh (26)
Pet: Melody the Bird
Year 4: Eoin deeply appreciates Melody’s company, but he fears that the small bird is lonely. With Niamh’s permission, he purchases a second canary and names it Harmony. The name suits the bird well; it and Melody are frequently heard chirping and singing to each other. The family is thrilled with the new addition, although Mary would prefer a grandchild to another bird.
DH: Sean (30)
DW: Niamh (27)
Pet: Melody the Bird; Harmony the Bird
Year 5: Mary’s wish for a grandchild is granted, but it is not Niamh who gives birth. Sean’s younger sister Katie, who lives in Dublin, has her firstborn child in March. All of the O’Connors travel to Dublin for a few days’ vacation and the opportunity to meet baby Seamus.
DH: Sean (31)
DW: Niamh (28)
Pet: Melody the Bird; Harmony the Bird
Year 6: After several years of marriage, Niamh has not successfully conceived. Concerned, she visits a fertility specialist in a major city, who prescribes Clomid. In March, Niamh conceives twins; on December 3rd, son James and daughter Brigid are born by caesarean section. Brigid is the elder twin by two minutes, but James outweighs her by an entire pound. Mary is thrilled to have two more grandchildren.
DH: Sean (32)
DW: Niamh (29)
DD: Brigid (nb) and DS: James (nb)
Pet: Melody the Bird; Harmony the Bird
Year 7: Before the twins were born, Niamh investigated adoption. She felt called to adopt an older child, perhaps one with special needs. In August, she and Sean welcome an eight-year old son from Kyrgyzstan into their home. The boy, who Niamh and Sean rename Thomas, is quite handsome, but suffers from an irreparable heart defect. The stress of physical labor prevents Thomas from helping his father around the farm, but he enjoys feeding flocks of geese and chickens with his grandfather.
DH: Sean (33)
DW: Niamh (30)
DS: Thomas (8); DD: Brigid (1) and DS: James (1)
Pet: Melody the Bird; Harmony the Bird
Year 8: The O’Connors return to Kyrgyzstan to adopt another child, a 5-year old girl who caught Sean’s eyes when he first met Thomas. The little girl is intelligent and full of smiles, but she was abandoned at the age of 3 by an impoverished farming family. In February, little Holly comes home; by August, the precocious child is ready to begin school.
DH: Sean (34)
DW: Niamh (31)
DS: Thomas (9); DD: Holly (5); DD: Brigid (2) and DS: James (2)
Pet: Melody the Bird; Harmony the Bird
Year 9: In order to advance her journalism career, Niamh begins online courses to earn a Master’s degree. She speculates that an advanced degree will buy her a promotion to senior staff membership at the local newspaper.
DH: Sean (35)
DW: Niamh (32)
DS: Thomas (10); DD: Holly (6); DD: Brigid (3) and DS: James (3)
Pet: Melody the Bird; Harmony the Bird
Year 10: Surely enough, Niamh’s plan to earn a Master’s degree pays off. Although only midway through her studies, she is offered an editorial position at the local newspaper. The position comes with a raise, and so she and Sean are able to add an extension to their farmhouse. Finally, Mary and Eoin have a bedroom on the ground floor; now, Eoin will not need to exhaust himself walking up- and downstairs.
